THE PROBLEM WITH BIG LAKE BOATS

We have 70 years of real world experience with the currently available brands, and here’s what we found:

  • Most are built by focus group or by CAD systems leading to inferior products that have no idea how rough the big lakes can be.
  • Most of them won’t allow you to go where you want to go.
  • Most are not designed for smooth rides on rougher waters.
  • Most cannot survive years of hot summers, freezing winters and pounding waves.

WINNIPEG YAWL IS THE SOLUTION!

What is a Winnipeg Yawl?

The Winnipeg Yawl represent the boat’s 70 years of commercial fishing heritage on Lake Winnipeg – Manitoba’s greatest lake, and the 7th largest lake in North America. The “yawl” in Winnipeg Yawl describes the boat’s style and hull. Of Icelandic origin brought to the Lake Winnipeg area by Icelandic settlers in the late 19th century, the “fishing yawl” represents years of experimenting, design, and hard real-world use in the Lake Winnipeg commercial gill-netting fishing industry. Lake of the Woods Boatworks now takes the result of all that hard-earned knowledge to provide you a tough, venerable, all-around boat that will get you, your family, and your equipment where you want to go.

HOW THE WINNIPEG YAWL IS DIFFERENT

The Winnipeg Yawl is a fiberglass center-console boat in 21 and 23 foot lengths. Originating in Iceland, the yawl-style boat is characterized by its stability and ease in handling rough water.

The hull is a semi-displacement hull which means it doesn’t have to “get up on plane” to be go fast or be efficient like other boats do. It also is designed to carry heavy loads without losing its sea-worthy-ness.

The boat has a narrow beam compared to other boats on the market. This allows it to slide through the waves like a knife versus like a piece of 2×4 lumber like other boats.

The bow is higher than most other boats to keep people in and water out.

Even with a narrow beam, the Winnipeg Yawl is very stable. Because of its unique construction, it has an extremely low center of gravity which keeps it upright even in the roughest water.
