Every Winnipeg Yawl boat is built on a venerable, tried-and-true hull design with superb rough-water characteristics, and relied upon by commercial fishermen in unforgiving waters. Its unique characteristics provide versatility, safety, and a smooth ride in rough water.
Winnipeg Yawl Proven Design:
The Winnipeg Yawl semi-displacement hull is a versatile, age-less, and proven design. Similar designs have been used across the
world for centuries. Of Scandinavian origin, the Winnipeg Yawl came to the Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba area with Icelandic
settlers in the late 1800s, and is still in use today. It combines the best characteristics of a planning hull (speed) and
displacement hull (efficiency). As a result, it allows for comfortable rough water cruising and efficient fuel usage under heavy
loads, and at a variety of speeds.
Characteristics of the Winnipeg Yawl Rough Water Hull:
- Fiberglass Construction
- Narrow Beam: The narrow beam enables the boat to “slice” through waves rather than “slap” against them.
- Bow Flare: The significant bow flare helps to “push” rough water aside.
- Low Center of Gravity: The deck is close to the outer hull keeping the center of gravity close to the water.
- Stable: The low center of gravity keeps the boat stable despite a narrow beam.
- Bow Rise: The significant bow rise prevents large waves from submerging the bow.
- The Aft portion of the hull is flat with a rounded chine to produce ample lift and maintain stability.
